The joys and the challenges of being both a parent and a teacher.  &lt;BR/&gt;&lt;BR/&gt;Teaching younger children, I see how so much of their day is devoted to discovery. They discover their environment, the other children, their strengths and needs.  I enjoyed reading your post because you made the point that high school students are engaged in the same process. When I stop and think about myself in high school, the self-discovery piece stands out. One thing I reccomend is not telling students that they are incapable of taking your class but instead talk to them about what the requirements are and let them decide if they think they are capable. You could even show them a syllabus of all the assignments. Once you go in detail students will realize they are not capable of meeting the requirements for your class.
